SONITA MORIN-ABRAHAMS

As a young wife and mother, Sonita became interested in yoga and started taking classes while she attended college in Miami Florida in 1977. Her love affair with yoga continued, and in August 2000, she received her 200 hour certification at Kripalu Center for Yoga and Health in the following areas - asana, pranayama, meditation, theoretical and applied yogic philosophy, anatomy and physiology, communication, teaching methodology, teaching practicum, professional ethics and practices. After teaching for two years, Sonita decided to train under Yogi Amrit Desai, completing 250 hours in 2002, followed by an additional 200 hours of level 2 training in 2004.
Together with her daughter and her husband, Afya Yoga and Pilates studio was built in 2004 and became a sanctuary for those who wanted to nurture mind, body and spirit in a beautiful outdoor setting.
In 2003, Afya brought to Jamaica the exceptional master pilates teacher David Brown, who certified a group of yoga teachers and dancers in the Joseph Pilates basic mat certification course. Sonita, together with the others who completed this certification, went on to teach weekly pilates classes at Afya. She later went on to receive further training on the Pilates Reformer machine in New York.
Sonita currently teaches pilates on a Monday night, Amrit yoga on a Tuesday evening, and takes turns with other teachers to teach pilates on a Saturday morning and Amrit yoga on a Sunday morning. She considers herself very fortunate and blessed to own this beautiful studio, to have such wonderful and well trained teachers, office staff and to be able to share the gift of yoga and pilates with our students - everyone considered part of our wonderful Afya family!
